Chris Yohei Tokunaga
Chris Yohei Tokunaga is a Composer and electronic music producer based in Berlin, Germany. He writes lyrics and composes Electro-Pop or pop music with guitar. He also creates emotive instrumental electronic compositions.He has a musical “portrait” project where he interviews a subject, and based on their conversation, he makes suggestions as to what he could write about.He often writes songs about his mental health and his life with chronic visual hallucinations.
Flowers And Flames
Flowers And Flames is Chris’ fourth EP. It’s an EP with mostly instrumental tracks. The title track and EP cover are dedicated to his late Father who passed in 2009. The piece is titled Flowers And Flames because often in Japan, before the body of the deceased is cremated, they are put in a simple wooden coffin filled with flowers.Chris sings on the track “Alucinari”. The title is the origin of the word hallucination which was Latin for “to wander in the mind” .His track “Becoming weightlless” is the first of a series of musical Portraits he's made. It’s the idea of becoming weightless despite the the things that weigh us down.
Purple Sky
Purple Sky is an Electro-Pop EP. With moods ranging from joyful and care-free to heartbroken, there is a spectrum of emotions featured in this release.It features various singers and friends of Chris’ such as Ivana Gaffney, Laura Corallini, or Nina Rotner.The lyrics for two songs “Mistrust” and “Space” were written by his mother, a poet named Christine. Chris Yohei and Christine also collaborated on the lyrics for “Distances” and “simple Things”.One of Chris’ favorite songs on the EP is called “Sweet Dreams” and is a song describing his life with hallucinations.
Stars And Reveries
Stars And Reveries is an EP that was composed shortly after recovering from an acute psychosis and post-psychotic depression in 2017/2018.The songs describe the recovery from the bout of illness as well as how hopeless it made him feel at times.Except for the title track “Stars And Reveries” which features vocals from the singer Jele, all the vocals were recorded by Chris himself because of how personal the subject matter felt to him.
NIghts For Days
Chris’ first EP. The lyrics were all written by Christine, a poet and Chris’ mother.It features slightly jazz influenced electronic pieces at times, such as the song “Theresa”, which is about two lovers that live on opposite sides of the Oberbaumbrücke in Berlin. It features vocals by Nina Rotner.The track “You and I” is meant to be symbolic of his relationship between the physical reality and the hallucinatory “reality”.The song “Stay” is about the transient nature of love and feeling of being discouraged by it. It features vocals by Laura Corallini.
